How the calculation works
- Social security: 6.50% of gross on a permanent contract (4.70% pensions, 1.55% unemployment, 0.10% training, 0.15% intergenerational equity). Capped at €5,101.20 a month.
- Taxable base: gross − social security − €2,000 general expenses − the employment income reduction (up to €7,302 on low salaries).
- Income tax (IRPF): Spain's 2026 withholding scale (19% to 47%) on that base, minus the same scale applied to your personal allowance (€5,550, more with children).
- Low salaries: below €15,876 (single, no children) nothing is withheld, and the tax is capped at 43% of the excess over that limit.
This is what your employer withholds from your payslip (nómina). Your final income tax is settled in the annual return (declaración de la renta) and varies slightly by region and personal deductions.

Frequently asked questions
How much tax do you pay on a salary in Spain?
On a €30,000 salary a single person without children pays about €1,950 in social security and €4,926 in income tax, taking home €23,124 a year. Deductions grow with salary: from about 15% at €20,000 to around 36% at €100,000.
Is the salary in a Spanish contract gross or net?
Spanish job offers and contracts almost always quote the gross annual salary (salario bruto anual). Your take-home pay is what remains after social security and income tax withholding.
What does 14 payments mean?
Many Spanish salaries are paid in 14 instalments: 12 monthly payslips plus two extra payments, usually in June and December. Your yearly total is the same; each monthly payslip is just smaller.
Do foreigners pay the same tax in Spain?
Tax residents (more than 183 days a year in Spain) pay the same rates as Spaniards. Some newcomers can choose the special regime for inbound workers (Beckham Law), which taxes employment income at a flat 24% up to €600,000.
Does the calculator include regional taxes?
It uses Spain's national withholding procedure, which is what employers apply everywhere. Your final income tax in the annual return can be slightly higher or lower depending on your region (Madrid, Catalonia, the Balearic Islands…).
